Commercial Rekeying in Sawlog Bay
A key turned up in the parking lot with the shop's name on its fob. It came back to you, which is lucky, but it means keys are leaving the building on rings you have never seen, and the shop's locks have not changed since opening day.
Commercial Rekeying
In plain words
A commercial rekey is planned around the trading day. The locksmith agrees a window, often after close or before opening, and works door by door so the premises is never left without a locking entrance. Cylinders come out, are repinned at a bench in the van or on a counter, and go back in; interchangeable cores are simply swapped for freshly combinated ones. Each door is tried with both new and old keys before the next is started. New keys go to whoever opens up in the morning, and a written chart of doors and key groups stays with the manager.
How the visit goesA break-in overnight took the cash float and a staff member's bag with her work keys inside it. The glass is being replaced this morning, but the key that opened the door yesterday will still open it tonight unless the cylinders are changed.

How the visit goes
Who needs to open what
The keying plan is a picture of how the business runs, so the assessment asks who goes through which door on a normal day. Front-line staff need the customer entrance and perhaps the stockroom; supervisors add the office; the owner and the bookkeeper hold the cash room; the IT contractor reaches the server closet and nothing else. Out of that conversation come the key groups: doors keyed alike so one key covers a role, doors keyed differently where separation matters, and whether a master for the owner earns its place. The plan also names anything left out on purpose, so the chart shows both what changes and what stays.
Padlocks, cabinets and the mailbox
A business is more than its doors, and the same visit brings the smaller locks into the plan. Rekeyable padlocks on the compound gate, the propane cage or the roll shutter can be pinned to the same key as the back door, so the opening crew carries one key instead of four. Filing cabinets, the till drawer, a medicine or chemical cupboard and the display cases can be keyed alike for the staff who use them or kept separate for the manager. The lobby mailbox, which often still answers to a key from two tenants ago, gets a fresh cylinder or is repinned where its design allows. Each small lock is added to the chart alongside the doors.
How copies get made from now on
If the business moved to a restricted keyway, the way keys are copied has changed for good. Hardware stores and kiosks do not stock the blanks, which makes running off a spare on a lunch break far harder to arrange. New keys are ordered from the locksmith by one of the people named on the authorization letter, who signs for them, and the register grows by exactly that many. On a standard keyway, the same discipline is kept by habit: the manager orders keys, the register records them and a key that turns up unlisted prompts a question. Either way the count on paper and the count in the world stay the same, which is what key control means.

What affects the quote
Same fees day, night or weekend
1Restricted keyway
Moving to a patented, restricted keyway means new cylinders or cores rather than a repin of the old ones, and the blanks themselves carry a higher price than standard keys.
2Landlord and base-building coordination
Suite doors that must accept both your key and the landlord's master, or work that needs the property manager on site, add coordination the quote allows for.
3Mix of lock types
A key-in-lever cylinder, a storefront mortise cylinder, a back-door rim cylinder and a padlock take different handling, though several full-size formats can share one pin kit for the same key system; a premises with a wide mix of cylinder types and brands still takes longer than one with one.
Commercial Rekeying: questions
We lost a master key. Does the whole building need doing?
Only the cylinders that master opened, which the keying chart identifies. If the lost key was the top master, that is every lock in the system; if it was a departmental master, it is that department's doors. Where no chart exists, the locksmith reads the cylinders first to establish what the key reached. The remaining doors, and any keys that never opened them, are left exactly as they are.
How often should a business change its keys as a matter of routine?
There is no fixed interval. Rekey on events rather than on a calendar: a key not returned, a lease change, a break-in, a renovation crew finished, or a key count that no longer matches the register. Businesses with a good register and a restricted keyway often go years between rekeys because nothing prompts one. A yearly check of the register against the keys on the hook is the habit that tells you when the time has come.
Will rekeying affect our alarm system or card readers?
Mechanical rekeying leaves electronics alone: alarm panels, card readers and keypads keep their codes and credentials. What changes is the list of people holding keys, and it is worth updating the alarm company's keyholder list and retiring the codes of anyone who has left at the same time, since keys and codes usually walk out together. Where a door has both a card reader and a keyed override, the override cylinder is rekeyed with the rest.
