From the shop

Keys cut right, locks set true.

We keep a proper stock on the van, and that shapes how a visit goes. Cylinders in the common finishes, strikes, pins, blanks for the keys most houses around here use, closer parts and padlocks all ride with us, so most repairs are done with what is already on the shelf rather than something ordered in.

What we can sort out

Think of this page as a menu rather than a manual. You do not need to know the name of the part or the type of cylinder in your door. Pick the section that sounds closest, read what the visit looks like, and we will fill in the details together.

Lockouts

Lockout Services

Getting in is only half of an emergency visit. Once the door is open we look at why it locked you out: a worn key, a failing cylinder, a latch that catches.

Change or rekey

Change or Rekey Locks

Residential services are for the everyday building you live in, whether owned or rented. They range from cutting a spare and fixing a stiff cylinder to replacing every lock after a move, and we will always suggest the smaller job where it does what you need.

  1. Two detached brass lock cylinders and four house keys on a wooden counter. — Lock Rekeying, Wasaga Beach
Lock RekeyingThe previous owners left a coffee tin of keys on the counter, some labelled, most not. The house is yours now, but you have no idea how many copies were cut over the years or who still has one in a drawer somewhere.
  2. Close view of a satin-nickel deadbolt thumbturn and edge faceplate on a painted timber door. — Deadbolt Installation, Wasaga Beach
Deadbolt InstallationThe front door has a handsome lever and a keyed knob, and that is all. Nothing above it.
  3. Detached satin-nickel lever hardware, tubular latch and strike plate on a wooden workbench. — Lock Replacement & Upgrade, Wasaga Beach
Lock Replacement & UpgradeThe brass handleset has gone blotchy and green where the winter salt reaches it, and the coating on the deadbolt is lifting in flakes. It still locks, but it looks tired beside the fresh paint on the door.
  4. Closed mortise lock case with spindle opening, keyhole, latch and deadbolt on a wooden workbench. — Vintage Mortise Lock Service, Wasaga Beach
Vintage Mortise Lock ServiceThe old skeleton key still fits the keyhole, but it now needs a jiggle, a lean on the door and a little luck before the bolt moves. Last week it took three tries.
  5. Person holding a black door-handle assembly and a latch beside a glazed door with exposed lock openings. — Smart Lock Installation, Wasaga Beach
Smart Lock InstallationHalf the evenings someone asks whether the back door got locked, and nobody is sure. A lock that relocks on its own, shows its state in an app and reports when it was last opened would settle the question.
  6. Detached rim gate lock and separate box keeper on an outdoor workbench. — Gate & Building Entry Locks, Wasaga Beach
Gate & Building Entry LocksSomeone pried at the gate latch overnight, and now the strike plate hangs by one screw and the cylinder spins loose in its housing. The gate still closes, technically, but a firm shoulder is all it would take to open it…
  7. Two loose cam locks and a retaining clip resting below an open metal mailbox compartment. — Mailbox Lock Replacement, Wasaga Beach
Mailbox Lock ReplacementThe property manager mentioned that half the compartments in the lobby's mailbox panel are original to the building and are starting to fail one by one, key by key, as tenants turn over year after year.

How a visit goes

A business hands out keys as people join and rarely gets every one back as people leave. Rekeying resets that count.

Drawing: a house seen from the street. The van pulls up, the garage door is opened for the work, then it closes level and the porch light comes on.
  1. 1 of 3

    Planning the levels

Together we list the doors, then decide who should open everything, who should open a floor and who should open one room. That structure becomes the keying chart.

  2. 2 of 3

    Pinning to the chart

Every cylinder is pinned so the right keys work and nothing else does. We check each combination against the chart as we go, not at the end.

  3. 3 of 3

    Delivering keys and the record

You receive the keys labelled by level, the chart and a plain explanation of how to add a door or retire a key later without redoing the whole system.

Things people wonder about

(249) 492-2389

We are a landlord with a tenant leaving. When should the unit be rekeyed?

Between tenants is the ideal moment: the departing tenant has handed back their keys, the new one has not yet received any, and the unit is empty for the work. The incoming tenant then starts on keys nobody else has held, and the landlord's own master or emergency key is set up at the same time. Where a lease has ended in dispute, the locksmith asks to see the paperwork before changing locks on a unit that still holds a tenant's goods.

Does stamping keys 'do not duplicate' stop people copying them?

Not reliably. The stamp is a request, and any key on a standard blank can be copied by anyone with the blank and a machine. What does work is controlling the blank itself through a restricted keyway, or controlling access to the lock through interchangeable cores and a tight register. Stamping still has a place: a serial code on each key, instead of the business name, lets you track it without telling a finder where it fits.

Do I need my landlord's consent before rekeying my unit?

Read the lease, because that is where the answer lives. Commercial tenancies are governed mostly by the lease itself, and many leases require the tenant to tell the landlord when locks change, to provide a key for emergencies, or to use the landlord's approved locksmith. Doors on the building's master system, such as corridor or service doors, are normally the landlord's to change. Bring the lease to the assessment and the locksmith will sort the doors accordingly.

What proof do I need to show before locks are changed?

The locksmith confirms that the person ordering the work is entitled to change the locks: the owner, a tenant with the landlord's agreement, or a property or facilities manager for a business. Photo identification and something linking you to the address usually settle it, and for a company a letter or a call to the named contact does the same. It protects you as much as anyone, since the same check stops someone else from changing your locks.
